Canadian wind developer Beothuk Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with non-profit group Iron & Earth to explore job opportunities in the offshore wind sector.
Beothuk has plans for up to six wind projects totalling 4GW of power off Canada’s Atlantic coast, while Iron & Earth has been set up to provide oil and gas workers with options and training in clean energy sectors.
“This partnership is expected to further facilitate the apprenticeships and retraining necessary for oil and gas workers to move into the offshore wind sector,” Iron & Earth said.
Both parties said they have paid close attention to an industry shift from oil and gas into offshore wind in Europe, which has included displaced, skilled oil and gas workers, related supply chain industries, and executives at all levels.
Iron & Earth said it has identified employment opportunities from Beothuk’s projects, and “both groups are keen to explore the synergies between the offshore oil and gas and offshore wind sectors”.
