Nordex has installed the world’s tallest wind turbine at the Hausbay-Bickenbach wind park in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany.
The N131/3300 unit has a hub height of 164 metres and a rotor length of 65.5 metres, with a total height of just under 230 metres.
The company said the hybrid tower is made of a 100-metre concrete section and two tubular steel segments, which have been used previously on N117 and N131 turbines up to 200 metres.
Nordex said the N131/3300’s height allows the unit to make use of air layers offering a greater yield, but at the same time experiencing less turbulence in hilly and forest-rich terrain.
Type testing of the turbine was completed in January and it is certified in accordance with the German Institute for Building Technology guideline 2012 for wind zone S.
The company added that the turbine is particularly designed for low-wind regions with speeds of an annual average of up to 7.5 metres a second.
The project is located roughly 100km west of Frankfurt/Main, and has been developed by Kreuzberger & Spengler Regenerative Energie from Dunningen-Seedorf.
The 100-metre concrete tower was supplied by Max Bögl.
