Health and safety incidents in the UK offshore wind sector rose by about one third in 2015 from the previous year, according to the G9 Offshore Wind Health and Safety Association.

Winds farms in the UK posted a 31% rise in the total recordable injury rate (TRIR) and a 34% jump in lost time injury frequency (LTIF).

European figures were broadly unchanged on the previous year, the G9 said.

There were 790 incidents in the UK with 28 work days lost and 983 incidents in the Europe with 41 works days lost.

The LTIF rate was 1.93 in Europe and 2.96 in the UK. TRIR was 5.99 in Europe and 7.95 in the UK. There were no fatalities in 2015.

G9 Offshore Wind Health and Safety Association chairman Jonathan Cole said: “These reports provide the industry with a valuable insight into safety performance.

“Although the TRIR and LTIF do not show the whole story, it is important to understand the changes in these numbers and I will be working closely with my G9 colleagues and other industry stakeholders to ensure measures are put into place to instigate the necessary performance improvement.”

The G9 has reported on the health and safety performance of G9 members across the UK and Northern Europe since 2013.

After collecting additional data from UK Round 3 developers, which included non-G9 members and in response to industry demand, there are now separate UK statistics.
