Belgium outfit High Wind has developed a guidance system called Boom Lock to aid offshore turbine installation during strong winds.
The company said the system is mounted on a jack-up vessel’s crane to provide more control of the hook and the payload.
It added that Boom Lock has been certified by ABS to lift turbine components at a 20 metres a second wind speed, and tests with a 6MW turbine blade proved its capability of lifting blades at 15m/s wind with gusts up to 20m/s.
“There is an even greater need for safe installation practices with less wind sensitivity to the lifting process,” with larger turbines being developed, High Wind said.
