Politics must not stand in the way of British consumers reaping the benefits of cheap onshore wind, according to RenewableUK chief executive Hugh McNeal.
Speaking at the RenewableUK Wales conference in Cardiff, McNeal said onshore wind is now the cheapest source of new power generation in Britain and this has “transformed the conversation” with critics of the technology.
“Our critics have said for years that renewables are more expensive, but the evidence shows onshore wind reaching financial close next year will be cheaper than gas.”
McNeal (pictured) said onshore wind is now part of the new energy mainstream in Britain, with more than 25% of electricity generated by renewables last year, more than coal and nuclear, with wind alone contributing 12%.
The R-UK chief said the past 12 months had been “incredibly challenging” with the Energy Bill hitting the renewables profession and their families hard, but he called on Welsh companies in the sector to shout from the rooftops about their success.
“I am determined not to let the last 12 months cloud the incredible achievements that Wales has been able to deliver. Be confident, we are winning.”
