The European Commission has confirmed tidal developers OpenHydro and Tocardo have won a combined €5m for two separate projects under its Horizon 2020 Fast Track to Innovation scheme.
Ireland’s OpenHydro was awarded €2,996,327 for the Open-Centre Tidal Turbine Industrial Capability project.
The pilot programme is aimed at finding ways to make tidal as cheap as wind energy so that it is more practical to use in the electricity grid.
OpenHydro’s project partners are Frazer Nash Consultancy, Cockerill Maintenance & Ingenierie, Nitronica Limited and JL Mag Europe.
Dutch tidal fabricator Tocardo was awarded €2m for the Demonstration of Integrated Solution for Offshore Tocardo Tidal Power Plants project.
Project partners are the European Marine Energy Centre, French marine institute Ifremer and Leask Marine.
Spanish tidal developer Magallanes Renovables was awarded €1,909,823 for a project entitled ‘Second Generation Technologies in Ocean Energy’ in partnership with Leask Marine, EMEC and ABB.
