Irish tidal outfit OpenHydro will next month install the first of two 2MW turbines in Canada’s Bay of Fundy.
Nova Scotia developer Cape Sharp Tidal, a joint venture between OpenHydro and Canadian utility Emera, will start deployment of the Open Centre Turbine during a 24-27 June slack tide window.
Turbine components and the installation barge have been made at Aecon’s Pictou shipyard. The turbine is scheduled to depart from Pictou for a two-week journey around the province.
The 4MW tidal array is being installed at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy near Parrsboro. The second turbine is due to be installed by the end of the year.
The 20-metre high OpenHydro turbines have a 16-metre diameter and weigh 1000 tonnes.
