French company DCNS has submitted a permit application to build a workshop in Cherbourg to manufacture tidal turbines for its OpenHydro subsidiary.
DCNS said the workshop, which will be built on 25 hectares of land owned by Associated Normandy Ports, is part of the Raz Blanchard project to build a seven-turbine 14MW demo scheme with EDF Energies Nouvelles by 2018.
The workshop, which is expected to be ready in 2017, also aims to produce turbines for a future commercial farm at Raz Blanchard and for another scheme planned in Alderney.
It will initially have a capacity of 25 turbines a year, with plans to expand production to 50 units a year.
