Food giant Mars is to be powered by 100% renewable energy sourced from Eneco’s 66MW Moy wind farm in the Scottish Highlands.
A total of 20 Nordex 3.3MW turbines will supply the equivalent of all power necessary to power all 12 Mars sites in the UK via a commitment stretching for the next 10 years.
Brands to be supported by wind power include Mars, Pedigree, Whiskas, Extra and Uncle Ben’s. Power from teh wind farm could produce enough Maltesers to fill 166 Olympic swimming pools each year.
The company holds a long-term ambition to make its global operations fully carbon neutral by 2040.
Mars chief sustainability officer Barry Parkin said: “Moy will contribute significantly to our effort to eliminate fossil fuel energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from our global operations by 2040 as part of our ‘Sustainable in a Generation’ program.
“We recognize all businesses have a responsibility to tackle climate change and we hope our partnership with Eneco at Moy will encourage other companies to take steps to reduce their own carbon footprint through renewable energy.”
