Norwegian shipyard Ulstein has unveiled a next-generation cable-lay vessel capable of carrying 12,500 tonnes of cable in a single length.
The LX109 is described as a “high capacity, highly efficient” ship with slimmer than usual dimensions.
Ulstein said the patent-pending Cable Arch system in combination with open top vessel design results in the “unprecedented” carrying capacity.
The arch connects the forward and aft turntables to load and lay continuous cable lengths. Also includedon the vessel (pictured) are the usual Ulstein X-Bow and X-Stern designs.
“With this design we (are bringing) the cable lay market to the next level,” said Edwin van Leeuwen, product nanagement leader at Ulstein. “Using the ship and equipment knowledge available in Ulstein resulted in a revolutionary, truly integrated design, based on existing technologies.”
