Scottish company Aggreko is to provide power generation during the construction of the 336MW Galloper offshore wind farm, which is to be located 27 miles off the Suffolk coast.
Aggreko will supply 56 lightweight 20kVA wind-charged generators, plus a standby machine, to provide power during the 40-week plus construction phase, starting in July 2016.
James Fisher, which is the offshore and marine services contractor to Galloper, awarded the contract.
Aggreko said the generators have outlets at 110V, 240V and 415V and will be used to power hand tools and other equipment.
The machines weigh less than one tonne and come with a mini wind turbine, which is used to charge the generator’s battery.
The light weight of the units allows them to be transported by crew transfer vessels and lifted using the turbine’s davit crane, if required, Aggreko said.
Aggreko business development manager for Northern Europe offshore renewables Marcus Saul said: “Our new fleet of generators has been specially developed to withstand the extreme environment of the offshore wind market and this will be its first application.”
RWE Innogy UK is a joint equity partner in Galloper, together with UK Green Investment Bank, Siemens Financial Services and Macquarie Capital.
