Energinet.dk is planning to install the substation for the 400MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm starting this weekend, depending on weather off the west coast of Denmark.
The transmission operator has hired Seaway Heavy Lifting to tackle both the HSM-built 1500-tonne foundation and 1800-tonne topside, which are currently in Esbjerg harbour.
Project manager Soren Juul Larsen said: “The substation will be used to collect power from the offshore wind farm Horns Rev 3, which is an important element in the transition to more renewable energy in the Danish electricity grid.”
The foundation will be affixed to the seabed using 60-metre pin piles which each weigh 120 tonnes with the topside being lifted into place afterwards. Heavylift vessel Stanislav Yudin is expected to carry out the job.
“These are very heavy elements and it requires great expertise, precision and power to get them positioned correctly,” said Larsen. “The whole exercise takes about a week and a crew of 100.”
Vattenfall will build Horns Rev 3 with full operations planned before 2020.
