Cape Wind has suffered another blow as Massachusetts regulators refused to extend transmission line permits for the developer’s 468MW wind project off the US east coast.
The state Energy Facilities Siting Board on Wednesday voted against Cape Wind’s request. The developer had asked for a two-year extension through 1 May 2017 for the 18-mile subsea and underground cables.
In a tentative decision released last week presiding officer James Buckley said Cape Wind faces too many obstacles to justify the extension.
The project proposed in Nantucket Sound lost a pair of power purchase agreements covering 75% of the output after failing to close financing by the end of 2014. The project also faces ongoing legal challenges.
Federal regulators and the New England grid operator have granted two-year lease and interconnection extensions for Cape Wind.
