France has officially launched a third offshore wind energy tender that includes a single zone off Dunkirk.
No details were given concerning the tender’s overall capacity or its timetable. It is also unclear if the Dunkirk zone will feature one or several offshore wind farms.
In the run-up to the announcement, 18 different offshore sites had been considered with a short-list featuring up to four.
Details of the bidding criteria will be agreed in consultation with interested bidders. Public agencies will commission environmental studies on the wind, wave and soil conditions.
France is also planning on granting the offshore construction permit to the successful bidder directly after the latter is chosen.
The government previously said the third tender’s maximum capacity will be between 500MW and 3000MW.
France’s first two tenders have had an overall capacity of 3000MW. All projects will be up and running by 2023.
