The Western Isles is preparing to run its own utility, Hebrides Energy, as part of a long-term plan to tap the islands’ renewable energy potential.
Hebrides Energy will be a collaboration between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and an unnamed UK energy supplier, together with representation from Hebrides Housing Partnership, Tighean Innse Gall, The Stornoway Trust and Community Energy Scotland.
Hebrides Energy will partner with the supplier to launch a bespoke electricity tariff during the second half of 2016.
It is also working with the partner to prioritise the early rollout of smart meters in the Western Isles.
Hebrides Energy chair Alasdair Macleod said: “We are positive about our initial discussions with a potential partner which should bring about real savings for island consumers over coming months.
“In terms of our vision for the company, by the time the National Grid Interconnector comes to the Western Isles, Hebrides Energy will have the experience and the track record to start investing in its own, on-island renewable electricity at as near cost as we can, passing on substantial savings to our established island customer base and making a real impact on unacceptable Fuel Poverty levels.”
