The developers of the 60.8MW Kinangpop wind farm in Kenya have stopped construction because of ongoing civil disturbances against the project.
Local opposition had started to disrupt the $66m project in May 2014 and protests have continued leading to a “number of further serious security events in the area”, Kinangpop Wind Park Ltd. said.
Engagement with local landowners could not be completed due to the disturbances, the developer added.
“The impact of the initial civil commotion has not been resolved while further incidents of civil commotion have occurred, creating an unsafe environment for the team to implement the project,” a statement from the company said.
“Furthermore, due to the consequent material delay, project funds have been depleted and project can no longer be completed by the shareholders.”
Kinangpop was the first fully licensed independent large-scale wind farm to reach financial close in Kenya.
