Dong Energy has secured the rights to a 1GW offshore wind lease in New Jersey from RES Americas.
The latter has requested that federal officials transfer the rights acquired in a 9 November auction to the Danish development company.
The deal is the second time RES has won and then offloaded a US wind lease. Rights off Massachusetts are being developed as the 1GW Bay State wind project.
Dong will lead on development of both projects with RES providing support services.
Dong executive vice president Samuel Leupold said: “The US is an interesting market for offshore wind with the potential to become a significant area for future development.”
He said the transfer broadens the company’s international scope.
“The site conditions are quite similar to those we currently work with in north-western Europe which means that the project could be developed using well-known technology.”
RES Americas chief executive Glen Davis said: “We are excited to be continuing our close relationship with Dong Energy through this major project as they increase their participation in the US market.”
The lease area to be transferred is 160,480 acres and is located between seven and 21 nautical miles from shore with water depths around 24 metres.
