Vestas has restarted a single turbine at Stena Renewable’s 96MW Lemnhult wind farm in Sweden following a turbine collapse in December.
The Danish manufacturer said it will “closely monitor relevant factors” on the V112 with a particular watch on the bolted flange between tower sections, which was thought to be responsible for the incident on Christmas Eve.
“The turbine will operate in a local operation mode which among other things entails the tower being visually inspected every seven days until the definitive root cause has been determined and any required corrective actions taken,” said Vestas.
Vestas found following preliminary tests on the flange bolts that there is no quality issue with the hardware itself. “Vestas service technicians and technology experts continue working to determine exactly what caused the accident,” said the company.
No injuries were assocaited with the failure of the 3MW machine. Lemnhult was built staring in 2012 with full operations kicking off in 2013.
