Local officials have approved Apex Clean Energy’s 75MW Rocky Forge project in Virginia.
The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to grant a special use permit for the state’s first wind farm.
“The county permit application represents the most significant step yet toward Virginia’s joining the other 39 states that are generating utility-scale electricity with wind energy,” said Apex development manager Charlie Johnson.
Apex plans to build up to 25 turbines on a ridge-top site, located near existing transmission lines operated by Dominion Power.
The company also seeks clearance by the state Department of Environmental Quality and the Federal Aviation Authority.
The Charlottesville, Virginia headquartered-developer expects to build and commission Rocky Forge in 2017.
