The Union Cabinet in India has given its approval for India to become a member of the International Energy Agency – Ocean Energy Systems.
The organisation, chaired by India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has signed the implementing agreement.
As a member of the IEA-OES, India will be able to utilise advanced research and development teams and technology globally. It will allow India to partner other countries in testing and developing.
The IEA is an inter-governmental organisation that has a broad role of promoting alternative energy sources. It acts as energy policy advisor to 29 countries.
The OES was launched in 2001 and is also an inter-governmental group, working under a framework set up by the IEA
India has a huge coastline and severe power deficits, which the government believes, makes studying ocean renewables vital. With high sea surface temperatures, technologies such as ocean thermal energy conversion could be a good option for the country.
