US utility American Electric Power has agreed to develop 900MW of wind and solar projects in Ohio under a deal to buy electricity from coal-fired generators.
Subsidiary AEP Ohio reached a settlement agreement with state regulators, environmental groups and others over long-term power purchase agreements. The deal includes converting some plants to co-fire natural gas and accelerating the closure of coal operations.
The utility plans to develop 500MW of wind and 400MW of solar projects in Ohio over the next five years. It will also provide up to $100m in customer credits.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is expected to rule on the proposal in early 2016.
