The Morlais Tidal Energy Demonstration Zone off the coast of Anglesey is asking tidal energy developers to prepare expressions of interest for their devices to be used at the site.
This will be the first step in the process that will lead to tidal arrays producing up to 30MW each in the 35 square kilometre zone.
The zone is managed by Menter Môn who were appointed as the leaseholder at the site by The Crown Estate in 2014.
Menter Mon director Gerallt Llewelyn said: “Our role is to make the Morlais zone attractive to developers. We intend to do this by pursuing wholesale consent and providing grid infrastructure.
“If we are successful we are confident that Morlais will be one of the most sought after tidal energy sites in the world”
The Morlais site has been working closely with the Welsh government to engage with tidal developers to generate interest in the site.
The expression of interest will be the first chance for developers to officially register their interest and will be followed by a full application process in early 2016.
The Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, Edwina Hart said: “I welcome the progress being made by Morlais in encouraging and supporting this important sector of the Welsh economy. The Welsh Government is fully committed to seeing a thriving community of marine energy businesses operating off the coast of Wales and this is an important step forward in achieving that.”
They will then be able to access the expression of interest and all supporting documents. Tidal developers seeking to register their interest are invited to contact the Morlais team through leasing@morlaisenergy.com
