Carnegie Wave Energy has had proposals for a renewables roadmap, wave assessment and microgrid design for Mauritius approved by government stakeholders and project partners.
The proposal, which follows on from a June memorandum of understanding with the Mauritian Research Council, will focus on three areas.
First, it will involve the delivery of a renewable energy roadmap for the country, including technical, commercial and financial feasibility studies.
Second, there will be an assessment for wave energy potential for Mauritius, including identification of a preferred site for the Ceto wave energy project.
Third, a microgrid powered desalination plant will be designed for the Mauritian island of Rodrigues.
Funding for the projects will be finalised in the coming weeks and work will start in January.
Carnegie chief operating officer Greg Allen said: “Renewable microgrid solutions incorporating combinations of wave, wind, solar, energy storage and desalination have potential to deliver cheaper and cleaner power and freshwater for islands with much greater energy security than alternatives.”
