Italian company Turboden, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, is to supply Kantor Energy with a 6.5MW organic rankine cycle (ORC) turbogenerator for a biomass plant in Sheffield.
Kantor is the principal EPC contractor on the project, which will be built on a brownfield site in the Holbrook industrial estate.
The facility will use about 55,000 tonnes of waste timber wood from demolition sites as fuel.
When the plant is in operation it will sell electricity to GDF Suez under a long-term power off take agreement. Veolia Energy Services has an operations and maintenance contract on behalf of Equitix for the plant.
Equitix and the UK Green Investment Bank have invested £30m in the project, which was promoted by UYE (UK) – a local private energy development company.
