Australia is to consider developing offshore wind power capacity, Environment Minister Greg Hunt told a conference in Shanghai on 3 November.
The announcement indicates a change in the government’s position on offshore wind, which was opposed by the previous prime minister Tony Abbott, according to a Bloomberg report.
The news agency report Hunt as saying “We will try to facilitate offshore wind,” at a Bloomberg New Energy Finance conference. “There are some significant opportunities that are close to the electricity backbone and I think there are likely to be some major international financing and investment opportunities on a grand scale,” he said.
“So long as it produces reliable electricity, that the regulator believes is high quality, then that’s all that matters to us,” Bloomberg reported Hunt as saying.
