The Renewable Energy Association has called on the UK goverment to support energy storage as part of a £100bn committment to infrastructure spending.
The trade group said management of supply and demand is one of three key priorities for the newly unveiled National Infrastructure Commission and that large-scale storage can help to meet those goals.
“The REA supports the development of energy storage technologies nationally and looks forward to working with the NIC to develop a world-class energy storage industry in conjunction with the UK’s cutting edge academic institutions, tenacious start-ups, and established companies of all sizes,” it said.
REA analyst Frank Gordon added: “Storage is a critical component to the nation’s transition to a more decentralised energy supply. This will enable new business models in the industry and facilitate greater renewables integration.”
Chancellor George Osborne took the wraps off the NIC today. Priorities include “energy, particularly exploring how the UK can better balance supply and demand, aiming for an energy market where prices are reflective of costs to the overall system”.
