Transformers for the substation at Vattenfall’s 228MW Pen y Cymoedd wind farm in Wales will be delivered next week.
Developer Vattenfall said the third and fourth transformers for the project will be delivered to the Rhigos site on Monday afternoon (October 26).
The units will arrive at Immingham Docks, near Grimsby, then will be transported by road up the M4, the A465 followed by the A4061 up to the main site entrance at the top of Rhigos mountain.
Contractors ABB is providing the equipment for two substations at the project located between Neath and Aberdare in South Wales, linked by 9.2km underground cable connections.
The wind farm’s 76 turbines will feed into the Pen y Cymoedd substation, which will step up the voltage from 33kV to 132kV. The second substation at Rhigos will step up voltage from 132kV to 400kV to feed into a new 400kV National Grid substation.
A Vattenfall spokesman said: “The transformers will be placed in situ within the onshore substation which is currently being constructed next to the permanent operations and maintenance building, which has been designed to house a team of 30 staff.”
Vattenfall added it is expecting to commence turbine component deliveries in mid-November, with installation still slated for early 2016.
Pen y Cymoedd is due online in early 2017.
