ABB is to supply MHI Vestas with transformers for turbines destined for the 731MW Borssele 3&4 offshore wind farm off the coast of the Netherlands.
The $20m deal will see ABB supply WindStar transformers for the 77 V164 9.5MW machines.
ABB said WindStar is specifically designed to fit into the tower of a wind turbine and can operate at 66kV.
ABB transformer business managing director Markus Heimbach said: “These innovative transformers facilitate the integration of offshore wind energy bringing clean power to consumers and reinforcing our position as a partner of choice for enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.
“ABB is a leader in the wind industry, providing components to turbine manufacturers and enabling the connection of wind farms to the grid.”
Borssele 3&4 is being developed by the Blauwwind consortium, which comprises Partners Group (45%), Shell (20%), Diamond Generating Europe (15%), Eneco Group (10%) and Van Oord (10%).
Main construction work is due to start in the fourth quarter of 2019, with commercial production expected in early 2021.
