AEG control equipment chosen for Dogger Bank

Norwegian EPC Aibel has selected AEG Power Solution’s AC & DC systems to secure critical control equipment at the Dogger Bank wind farm in the North Sea.

The Protect 8 UPS and Protect RCS rectifiers will be used to secure power on the  converter offshore platforms for the Equinor and SSE Renewables project.

Dogger Bank will have a combined capacity of up to 3.6GW, and it is expected to produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 4.5 million UK homes, making it the largest offshore wind farm worldwide.

Aibel will deliver two HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) converter platforms (converting AC power generated by the wind turbines to DC for easier transportation to the shore) for the Dogger Bank A and Dogger Bank B projects.

AEG PS systems are securing power respectively for the control process of the conversion operation (AC systems) and the switchgear (DC systems).

The solution includes two Protect RCS 110TPRE1200 rectifiers, two Protect 8 inverters 60KVA, distribution cabinets and batteries on racks.

Both systems have proven track records of successful operation in the toughest environment.

AEG PS were chosen thanks to the engineering support they were able to provide at early stage in the design of the solution and to the proven track-records in offshore applications.

Sales director NW & Central Europe Robin Lemstra said: “Our global footprint and service expertise also helped making the difference as the construction of the topsides of the platforms will be done at Aibel’s yard in Thailand.

“Our local service team in Thailand will commission our equipment there and when the platform is installed in the North Sea our local UK & Dutch service teams with full offshore qualifications are always nearby to provide technical support & maintenance if required.”
