German grid operator Amprion has contracted Ludwig Freytag to carry out the landfall drilling in the coastal sea of Lower Saxony for the 1800MW DolWin4 and BorWin4 offshore grid links.

Ludwig Freytag will start the first horizontal directional drilling on the island of Norderney in summer 2022, Amprion said.

The latter company will lay up to 125km of subsea cables and 155km of underground cables to link DolWin4 and BorWin4 to the German grid.

From the North Sea, the cables pass under the island of Norderney and the coastal protection dike in Hilgenriedersiel.

Ludwig Freytag will carry out the horizontal bores to cross the island and dike.

Amprion project manager Henning Kuchenbuch said: “The construction work in the Wadden Sea National Park is a particular challenge when crossing islands and dikes.

“We are pleased to have an experienced partner at our side in Ludwig Freytag.

“The company has already proven several times in comparable projects that it can cope with both structural and environmental challenges.”

Amprion has a construction time window between mid-July and the end of September.

The first four of the total of 12 wells will start in summer 2022, it said.
