Amprion has begun work on the laying of subsea cables for the DoWin4 offshore wind grid connection in the German North Sea.

Preparation work will be carried out over the next two weeks before cable installation can begin.

For the offshore grid connection system DolWin4, Amprion will lay cables in the exclusive economic zone, in the Lower Saxony coastal sea, as well as on land between the coast and Lingen.

This summer, the laying of subsea cables will take place in the Wadden Sea and north of Norderney. The first measures are now beginning north of the island, known as the pre-lay run.

Amprion said the seabed route is being prepared to ensure smooth cable laying and to clear the routes of possible objects, such as lost fishing nets.

After the pre-lay run is completed, the cable installation work will begin. Starting in early August, the cable installation will begin off the coast north of Hilgenriedersiel.

The largely parallel offshore grid connection systems DolWin4 and BorWin4 are scheduled to be operational by 2028.

From the North Sea wind farms, the cables initially run 60km and 125km offshore. They pass underneath the island of Norderney and reach the coast at Hilgenriedersiel.

From there, they continue for around 155km as underground cables towards the conversion station Hanekenfähr in Lingen (Ems), where Amprion will connect them to its transmission grid.
