The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has approved the site assessment plan for the 1GW Bay State offshore wind farm off the Massachusetts coast.
The project, which is being developed by a joint venture between Dong Energy and Eversource, will be located 15 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.
The approval paves the way for the developers to deploy a WindSentinel floating lidar to measure wave and wind speeds in the project’s lease area.
Dong Energy North America president Thomas Brostrøm said: “We are thrilled to be the first in the country to receive this approval from BOEM, and to be a part of this huge step forward for the offshore wind industry in the US.”
The developers said they will now submit a proposal for the Massachusetts contracts, which will be awarded in 2018.
