The Fraunhofer IWES research institute will start operating a wind energy test site in Bremerhaven in early 2017 with the help of an €18.5m grant from Germany’s energy ministry.
Construction of the facility is underway and will feature Adwen’s AD 8-180 offshore wind prototype turbine when tests start in the spring.
Fraunhofer IWES said: “Comparison of field survey results with the data obtained on the large-scale test rigs will significantly expand the opportunities for further optimisation of measuring and testing methods as well as risk mitigation for new turbine designs.”
Adwen executive Luis Álvarez said: “Already, the Fraunhofer IWES DyNaLab has allowed us to exhaustively validate our technology, resulting in great confidence about the optimal performance and reliability of the turbine.”
The 8MW wind turbine will also be available to other partners as a research platform, Fraunhofer IWES said.
