Germany’s new offshore wind law is to come into force tomorrow, according to Energy Minister Peter Altmaier.
The legislation, which confirms the beefed-up 20GW by 2030 and 40GW by 2040 targets, will be published later today before taking effect on Thursday.
Its introduction marks the end of a long lobbying effort by industry to increase the country’s ambition from the previous 15GW goal for this decade.
The law also allows for grid connections associated with the expansion.
In addition, the rules have cleared the creation of a compensation scheme that allows reimbursement of costs to developers for preliminary area examinations carried out prior to the introduction of the centralised tender system.
“With ambitious expansion targets up to the year 2040, Germany is expanding its pioneering role in the field of wind energy at sea,” said Altmaier.
“Due to the rapid development of technology, in which German companies are significantly involved, wind energy at sea provides ever cheaper green electricity and represents an important pillar of the German and European energy transition.”
