The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has released the draft environmental impact statement for Orsted and PSEG’s up to 1400MW Ocean Wind 1 wind farm off New Jersey.

BOEM’s Release of Ocean Wind 1’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement Marks an Exciting Milestone for Ørsted and PSEG Offshore Wind Project

The document analyses the potential environmental impacts of the wind farm and is the first DEIS published by the Biden Administration for an offshore wind energy project.

The Notice of Availability for the DEIS will publish in the Federal Register on 24 June, opening a 45-day public comment period

“BOEM remains committed to an environmental review process that establishes a strong foundation for offshore wind projects in the U.S. while promoting ocean co-use and avoiding or reducing potential conflicts,” said BOEM Director Amanda Lefton.

“The feedback provided by ocean users and our many stakeholders will help inform the Final EIS and provide invaluable insight to decision makers.”

Orsted hailed the move as a major milestone.

“While we are still reviewing the document, the release of the DEIS marks a critical and exciting permitting milestone for the project in BOEM’s review under the National Environmental Policy Act process and signifies one more step forward to contributing to New Jersey’s renewable energy goals,” said Maddy Urbish, Head of Government Affairs & Policy, NJ, Ørsted.

Orsted and PSEG are proposing up to 98 turbines in a lease area located 15 statute miles southeast of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
