California has set a floating offshore wind target of 3GW by 2030 as part of a raft of new goals for the west coast US state.
The California Energy Commission believes that as well as the end-decade goal the state can deliver up to 15GW by 2045 and possibly 20GW by 2050.
The targets are contained in a draft AB 525 report.
“The ambitious multi-gigawatt goals set by the California Energy Commission are very encouraging news and an important milestone for the Golden State’s offshore wind industry,” said Offshore Wind California executive director Adam Stern.
Stern said the targets bring the state into line with the Biden Administration’s sector ambitions.
“They show that California is serious about ‘going big’ on floating offshore wind to drive economies of scale and realize the substantial jobs, climate, and clean power benefits from responsibly developing this remarkable renewable energy resource,” he said.
“We want to thank the CEC Commissioners and staff for their work in preparing this draft report, as well as the authors and supporters of AB 525, which sets offshore wind planning goals as one of its key deliverables.
