Offshore Wind California (OWC) has praised the state legislature’s approval of $228m to support port upgrades for floating wind deployment.
The funds represent the first instalment of the $475m earmarked under Proposition 4, a $10bn climate bond approved by voters in 2024.
OWC said the commitment is “excellent news for California workers and residents” and will help deliver gigawatts of clean offshore power while supporting jobs and industry.
Executive director Adam Stern added: “Despite the unfortunate federal headwinds this year, California is staying the course on its commitment to offshore wind – to strengthen its energy security and independence, spur a hub for floating technology and jobs, and help secure the state’s path to 100% clean electricity by 2045.”
He urged the governor to sign the measure and said the funding would catalyse further public and private investment, supporting port projects in Long Beach and Humboldt among others.
OWC also noted offshore wind has bipartisan support from 75% of Californians, citing recent survey results, and stressed the sector’s potential to power up to 25 million homes once 25GW is deployed by 2045
