UK wind energy set records for half-hourly, daily and weekly supply during Christmas week, according to Renewable UK.
R-UK said National Grid figures show wind supplied 41% of the UK’s electricity needs in a half-hour period on Christmas Day, up from the previous record of 34%.
In the same period, 47% of the UK’s electricity came from renewable sources, it said.
Christmas Day also saw a new daily record for wind power of 32%, beating the previous high of 24%, R-UK said.
In the week ending 25 December, 20% of UK electricity was generated by wind, up from the existing 19% record.
Overall, renewables provided 28% of total generation in Christmas week, R-UK said.
R-UK deputy chief executive Maf Smith said: “Renewables are now a mainstream provider of electricity, delivering low cost, reliable power to consumers not just at Christmas but the whole year round.”
