Connecticut regulators have approved a 20-year power purchase agreement for 200MW of electricity from Orsted’s Revolution offshore wind farm off the US east coast.
The state’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority gave the green light for the power to be delivered from the project to Connecticut utilities Eversource and United Illuminating.
Revolution, which will be located in federal waters between Montauk in New York and Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, will also supply electricity to Rhode Island with a separate 400MW element.
Orsted said that with the PPA finalised it will accelerate development of the wind farm, with offshore installation scheduled to start in 2022. Commercial operations are slated for 2023.
Orsted US Offshore Wind co-chief executive Jeffrey Grybowski said: “Connecticut is now an important player in America’s offshore wind industry.
“We’re proud to be building the state’s first offshore wind farm. We’re ready to make major investments in our local workforce and in the Port of New London to ramp up this project.”
Deepwater Wind secured the rights to supply power from the project to the US state in Connecticut’s first offshore wind energy procurement round in June.
Orsted acquired Deepwater Wind in October.
