Orsted has kicked off offshore construction at its 752MW Borssele 1&2 wind farm off the Netherlands.
DEME Offshore hammered home the first of 94 monopile foundations, which have been supplied by Sif, EEW, EEW OSB and Bladt.
The first tubular will be the heaviest and tallest at the project, weighing 1188 tonnes and measure 76 metres, according to senior project manager Jan Wind.
Project EPC director Henrik Egholm added: “It’s great that the installation has started now, according to plan. We’re very well on track with the construction of the wind farm. Borssele 1&2 will be operational end of this year.”
Orsted Netherlands general manager Steven Engels said: “Borssele 1 & 2 will be our first offshore wind farm in the Netherlands and is an important step in the Dutch government’s ambitious shift towards green energy.
“Once completed, Borssele 1 & 2 will be the largest offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, able to supply renewable power to around one million Dutch households.”
The wind farm is located 22km off the coast of the Dutch province of Zeeland. Water depths range from 14 to 39.7 metres.
Ninety-four Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines will be installed starting in April.
