Construction starts on Fécamp substation in France

Atlantique Offshore Energy has begun construction of the Fécamp offshore wind farm electrical substation with its partners GE Grid Solutions and SDI.

The first steel sheet of the electrical substation for the offshore wind farm near Normandie, France was cut at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire.

Commissioned by a consortium composed of EDF Renouvelables, Enbridge and WPD Offshore, the susbstation will collect and transform the electricity produced by the 71 wind turbines of the 500MW Fécamp offshore wind farm to transfer it to the shore network, while ensuring remote control of the farm.

Atlantique Offshore Energy will be in charge of the topside and jacket-type foundation design, manufacturing and commissioning.

GE Grid Solutions has been tasked with high & medium voltage electrical equipment and protection control systems design, manufacturing and commissioning.

SDI is to transport and install these structures.

The delivery of the substation, whose construction mobilizes 400 people, is scheduled in 2022.

The same consortium is currently building the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm electrical substation, to be commissioned in 2021.

Atlantique Offshore Energy director Frédéric Grizaud (pictured) said: “With the start of the construction of the Fécamp offshore wind farm electrical substation, we are taking a new step forward in the energy transition process of France and Europe.

“We are proud to be part of it, with all our industrial partners.”
