A German court has ruled that construction work on the €180m Bremerhaven turbine pre-assembly terminal must stop to allow for further environmental studies.
The administrative court in the state of Bremen said today it will reassess the impacts of the facility. The court also questioned the jurisdiction of the state to issue planning approval for the project.
Planning consent for the turbine pre-assembly facility was challenged by green group BUND, the German branch of Friends of the Earth.
The group filed a legal complaint in December over the project’s alleged impact on protected areas. It has also questioned the need for the facility after Siemens announced its decision to build a nacelle factory in Cuxhaven some 12km away from the consented terminal.
Construction activities for a driveway to the quay and the hinterland transport connection may continue, the court added.
Developer Bremenport had kicked-off construction last year after authorities in Bremen consented the project. The project had been slated to be operational in 2019.
