DECC is to tweak Contracts for Difference rules to allow renewables projects to be delivered beyond the current cut-off of 2020.
The department is consulting on proposals to extend the delivery years of CfD projects to 31 March 2026 from 31 March 2020.
As announced in the 2016 Budget in February, the UK intends to auction up to £730m of support under the CfD framework for offshore wind and other less established renewable technologies for projects commissioning in the period 2021-2026.
“If we did not make this amendment, we would be unable to open up allocation rounds for delivery years after 31 March 2020,” said DECC.
The consultation closes on 8 August.
