Deepwater Wind is opening an office in New Bedford in Massachusetts as the US developer accelerates pre-development work for the Deepwater 1 offshore wind project.
“We’re putting our Massachusetts project into high gear, and opening our office in New Bedford is an important next step,” said Deepwater Wind chief executive Jeffrey Grybowski.
Deepwater recently hired a new vice president to lead project development. The new office is near New Bedford’s Marine Commerce Terminal, which will host offshore wind staging and deployment work.
The utility-scale Deepwater 1 Massachusetts wind farm is planned in a 1GW-plus site in federal waters roughly midway between Martha’s Vineyard and Montauk, New York.
Deepwater holds a 30-year lease for the 256 square mile area, which lies east of the company’s under-construction 30MW Block Island wind farm.
The developer has proposed a first phase, the 90MW Deepwater 1 South Fork project, to serve New York utility Long Island Power Authority.
Deepwater also intends to vie for a power purchase agreement under Massachusetts’ new comprehensive energy policy that calls for 1.6GW of offshore wind energy over the next decade.
The state is expected to launch the first phase of procurement in mid-2017.
