US developer Deepwater Wind is scouting port facilities in Brooklyn, a preliminary step in the path to an offshore wind project off New York.
“We are in the early stages of evaluating the potential for building offshore wind facilities to serve metropolitan New York,” said Deepwater.
“The waters off New York City are home to some of the country’s best offshore wind resources, and we’re confident offshore wind could play a major role in helping the city meet its 100% renewables goal,” said Deepwater.
The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal could serve as a laydown and staging area, although construction is years away.
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is working to identify commercial lease areas on the outer continental shelf ahead of a competitive auction. A 127-square-mile call area lies about 11 nautical miles south of the city of Long Beach.
Elsewhere, Deepwater in 2015 bid the 90MW Deepwater One-South Fork project in response to PSEG-Long Island’s request for new local energy resources serving that area.
It would be the first phase of a regional offshore wind farm the company is developing roughly 30 miles southeast of Montauk, New York, where Deepwater holds a 1GW commercial lease.
