Spanish developer Greenalia has filed a project and environmental planning application for a 50MW floating offshore wind project off the Canary Islands.
Parque Eolico Gofio will be located off the south-east coast of Gran Canaria island, in close proximity to the port of Arinaga.
The developer plans to use four 12.5MW offshore wind turbines on top of floating foundations and will deliver the energy produced using submarine cables.
The project is located in one of the highest wind resource areas in Europe.
Galicia-based Greenalia said the floating wind project could “help to unlock” the potential of offshore wind energy off the Spanish coast.
The development, construction and operation of Parque Eolico Gofio will contribute to establishing a green energy sector in the Canary region in order to meet a 310MW marine renewable energy target established by the Canary Government in 2017, known as Estrategia Energetica de Canarias 2015-2025 (EECan25).
