DNV GL has launched a joint industry project to develop recommended practice intended to de-risk the adoption of a wind turbine cargo fastening process known as ‘twisties’.
The twisties concept is a modular project-cargo transport frame system that is sea-fastened using container twist locks, DNV GL said.
“Transporting turbines and other wind farm components using twisties are shown to significantly lower construction programme durations to single season phases,” the company said.
DNV GL added that the system also allows for greater quantities of turbines to be installed using a defined number of wind turbine installation vessels.
“The concept demonstrates cost savings in some cases of above 25% compared to conventional installation practice,” the company said.
The system is based on standard 20-foot cargo container twist-lock centres.
DNV GL regional manager for NW Europe, Middle East & Africa Prajeev Rasiah said: “Bringing industry stakeholders together within this (project), with the intention of standardising wind project cargo now, can reduce installation costs.”
