DNV GL tackles Zephir lidar

DNV GL tackles Zephir lidar

DNV GL has signed a framework with Zephir Lidar to demonstrate the Zephir 300 wind lidar’s conformity with the IEC 61400-12-1 compliance standard.

DNV GL considers Zephir 300 to be at Stage 3 under “benign” conditions – accepted for use in bankable/finance-grade wind speed and energy assessments with either no or limited on-site met mast comparisons.

The framework further allows customers to request a DNV GL independent quality report. This request is in addition to the standard performance verification.

Zephir Lidar managing director Ian Locker said: “Having worked with DNV GL, and formerly Garrad Hassan, for more than a decade it really has been a rewarding journey.

“This framework agreement gives the industry further confidence, if required, that ZephIR 300 can be trusted to deliver accurate, IEC compliant and traceable results.”

Zephir 300 measures wind characteristics onshore and on fixed or floating platforms offshore from just 10 metres up to 200 metres above the installed position to inform wind regime.

DNV GL has also awarded eologix sensor technology with component certification for its ice sensor system.

The system provides the first autonomous sensors to exploit the different electrical properties of air, water and ice for icing detection directly on the surface of wind turbine rotor blades.

DNV GL has certified the system in line with the guideline GL2010.

Eologix’s wireless smart sensor can be placed directly onto the blade of the wind turbine, measuring icing and surface temperature even in locked-rotor state, providing early detection of ice formation from critical blade locations.

The sensor signal is sent directly to the to the receiver unit to initiate the necessary measures for optimised operations.

Eologix founder Michael Moser said: “Our objective was to develop an innovative new sensor solution that allows turbine operators and manufacturers to save costs and reduce the safety risk of the turbine operations while increasing the energy yield.

“We are delighted to deliver a product that meets all those objectives, thanks to the assistance from DNV GL’s experts that acted as a sounding board during the system’s development and certification process.”
