Dong Energy wants to develop an extra 2GW of offshore wind capacity at its Hornsea zone following a deal with The Crown Estate.
The Danish giant has reconfigured Hornsea as part of the Round 3 offshore wind development zones to secure an increased post-2020 pipeline of UK projects.
The Hornsea zone was originally slated to be 4GW, but the reappraisal has identified further capacity pushing the limit up to 6GW.
The extra power is coming from original Hornsea 3 splitting into two separate projects.
The new Hornsea Project Three, to the east of Hornsea 2, will be between 1GW and 2GW and is going forward to external consultation, Dong said.
Hornsea 4, with a capacity of up to 1GW, will be to the west of Hornsea 2.
These projects are in addition to the 1.2GW Hornsea 1 project that is to be built and the 1.8GW Hornsea 2, which is expected to gain a planning consent decision later this year.
Dong UK chairman Brent Cheshire said: “We are very pleased to have reached this agreement with The Crown Estate for the Hornsea projects, which highlights once again our absolute commitment to the UK offshore wind market.
“We see these projects as a vital part of our post-2020 pipeline.”
Hornsea 1 has a contract for difference and will be fully commissioned in 2020. Time frames for the other Hornsea projects are not known.
