Dong Energy and Vattenfall are cooperating on a project that will ensure an emergency power supply for the Dane’s 209MW Horns Rev 2 and the Swede’s upcoming 406.7MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farms off the Danish coast.
The companies have signed a mutual agreement for the supply of emergency power for each other’s wind turbines if the respective export cables fail.
Vattenfall project manager Niels Møller Jensen said: “If the export cable fails, it’s not only critical for the supply of electricity to customers on the mainland.
“A cable outage is also critical to the wind turbines. All turbines must always have power, especially to keep the blades’ positions correct in relation to the wind direction.”
He said that at Horns Rev 3 small diesel generators will be installed in each of the 49 wind turbines to ensure power for a few days.
However, if the outage is for longer an 8km 33kV link between the two wind farms will supply power from Horns Rev 2 and vice versa.
